Our History

In the Spring of 1889, J.W. Miller and John Kurth purchased two lots for $400.00 on the corner of Third and Pine St. They constructed a two story brick building, at the time the most elaborate building in Central Point. After opening an unsuccessful business both men left town. C.B. Rostel purchased the building and land from a Sheriff's sale on July 31st 1899 for a grand total of $2000.00. Rostel had performed some minor repairs on the building in 1905. But in 1909, at the height of a building boom in Central Point, he decided to undertake a major renovation. On May 25th work began doubling the size of the building. A second addition was added to the lot on the east side of the building. The Pine Street facade was altered to such an extent that it was impossible to to detect where the original structure left off and the new one began. The upper floor was remodeled to house serveral offices. The lower floor was divided into two business quarters leased by T.M. Jones, a furniture dealer, and W.D. Lewis and Sons, the prominent meat merchants. The Lewis Meat Market, in the eastern half was a favorite of local children for many years. Many organizations used the upper floor for community events. The Ladies Aid Society hosted a Halloween social here in 1913. It housed Damon Cafe in the 1920's owned by L. Damon and her son Ed Brown until 1937 when the building was sold to W.E. Alexander (Ground Floor) and the Woodman's Lodge (The Upper Floor). Alexander used the space to sell hardware and farm equipment. It remained a hardware store for decades later. The "Rostel" building now houses The Point Pub and Grill, it retains much of its over a hundred year old charm with original brick work and high ceilings.
